Music and Art Camp
June 24, 2015
Here’s a brief window into a typical day at Music and Art Camp at Silver Music. Really, no day at Music and Art Camp is “typical” as our themes change every week depending on the interests and level of the attending campers. But for those of you who haven’t experienced our Music and Art Camp, this brief summary might shed some light on our approach to learning and exploring the world through art and music. We hope you check out our Camp Photo Gallery or Camp Q&A page to find out more.
This week’s theme was Senses. We explored what it means to touch, taste, smell, hear, and see.
Today, Lorene led art & music camp. We continued our theme of the senses, and focused on taste and touch. Lorene brought a bunch of food items with her (e.g. popcorn, popcorn kernels, apples, lemons, and dark chocolate) and began by showing the kids the popcorn and kernels, comparing how they felt and tasted (or were unable to eat) and then did a movement activity where the kids “popped” with scarves to “Pop Goes the Weasel.”
We then did a tasting activity with the other food items, first feeling them and describing what they felt like, then tasting them and coming up with words to describe how they tasted. Then, for art making, we made prints out of the cut pieces of apple and lemons with acrylic paint, and glued popcorn and kernels to the paper.
We also read a book called “Drum City” and formed our own marching band, taking turns with who was the leader.
Then we took a short “nature walk” to the top of the hill, emphasizing sight and spotting anything plant-like. We felt the trees and bushes and described how they felt, and described the colors, shapes, and sizes of the flowers, etc.
Afterwards, back at camp, we created a story together and then Lorene assigned instruments and we recorded it.
Then sang goodbye!
Photos below are from Music and Art Camp earlier this week. We took turns on the instruments and practiced conducting. Campers focused on proper playing positions, bow holds, and exploring sounds. -
