We have a wonderful opportunity to perform at a neighborhood school, PS 199, on Saturday, October 18th! We will be one of the sponsors for the annual Walkathon, held from 10-2pm. Children and parents walk from a pier in Riverside Park up to the school, and then stay for an afternoon of games, sports, bouncy house, etc! Silver Music will have a table in the school yard with information about our programs, and will give a Group Performance at 12:30, led by Karolyn and Ellen. We have room for any and all violin students (playing Twinkle and beyond) and a few advanced cello students. We welcome parent volunteers to help us as well. If you are interested in having your child perform, or if you are able to help out as a Parent Volunteer, please email scheduling@silvermusic.org.

In observance of Rosh Hashanah, we will not be holding classes/lessons on Thursday, Sept 25. and Friday, Sept. 26. Please contact your private lesson teacher directly if you would like to schedule an extra lesson on those dates. With the exception of Reenat Pinchas’ students, classes/lessons will resume as usual over the weekend.

There’s never enough time to practice. Starting with this fundamental truth, how do you make the most of your limited practice time?
Quality beats quantity, and short but consistent quality practices will move you forward much more quickly than sporadic marathon sessions. The more creative and disciplined you are as a home teacher and practice partner, the more successful your practice sessions will be, even on your craziest, busiest day.
Here are 3 tips to help you get the most out of every session and keep practicing a positive, engaging experience for all:
Come up with a reasonable expectation of the amount of minutes your child will spend productively practicing (not including negotiating, complaining, drinking water, etc.), and then explain to your child that you’re going to set a timer and practice for those many minutes. Each time that you take a break (consensual or not) the timer stops. Set another time to see how long the breaks and procrastination are compared to the practice time!
You’re not going to fix every problem in one practice, or one week, or the next year, but it’s still important to have a clear idea of what you’re working towards. You can also use the timer at this level: if your child needs help with their bow hold, decide that you’re going to spend 1 minute seeing how many fantastic bow holds they can make. If your child is more advanced, pick one section of their piece and set the timer for 2 minutes with a specific practice goal—separate hands for pianists, slow intonation work for strings, etc. (More ideas for advanced practicing will be coming on this blog soon! Keep your eyes out.)
Behavioral training shows us the importance of ending on a positive note. Just because your child hasn’t fallen on the floor in exhaustion yet, does not mean you should just slip in another 2 minutes! If you stop on a good note, it will be much easier to pick up again the next day.

We are looking forward to a beautiful semester of music making this fall! The informal auditions for Chamber Music have been rescheduled for Sunday, September 14th at 6pm. If this presents a conflict for you, please email blythe@silvermusic.org and we will work something out. All other dates listed on the website remain unchanged.
The auditions are intended to give our faculty an idea of your playing and to allow you to meet some of the other musicians participating in Chamber Music this fall. The auditions will be low-stress, a means to enhance your experience overall.

Come sing along with music friends of all ages! To kick off our first Movie Night of the season, we’ll be showing this year’s hit, Frozen! The event will take place on Wednesday, August 27 at 6:30pm at 218 W 72nd St. The cost will be $10 at the door (cash or check only, babies and toddlers no fee). Light snack will be provided. Music and Art Camp is in high demand the last week of August! We’ve decided to offer an additional Music and Art Camp from 1-4pm in the afternoon at 45 Tiemann Place. The camp will mirror the morning Music and Art Camp.
Camp will be $450–sibling and multi-week discounts may be applied.
