This Spring 2023 we are offering in-person Ready, Set, Play! at our two locations, 218 W 72nd St and 45 Tiemann Place.
Our Ready, Set, Play! classes for children from 2 to 6 years (grouped by age) are designed to introduce the violin, viola, cello, flute, and piano in addition to other elements of music study; students play percussion instruments, listen and move to live music, read and write rhythms, and sing. Repetition of songs and activities from week to week allow children to gain confidence as they achieve comfort and mastery of musical skills. These classes encourage and prepare young children for instrumental study in a fun, relaxed, and supportive environment. In-person classes meet weekly for 45 minutes limited to 4 students with one teacher.

More about our Spring 2023 Ready, Set, Play! Program
Saturday/Sunday/Monday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday classes (16 weeks): $768
Tuesday classes (17 weeks): $816
Material Fee for New Students only: $50
Material fee:
This year, all students participating in our Ready, Set, Play! Classes will receive a Music Mind Games Xylophone and Rhythm Sticks. We have found that students benefit from having quality musical instruments accessible in their own homes. This is a gentle introduction to instrumental study–practicing at home and having ownership and care of your own instrument. (Students do not need to bring these instruments into the school. Students will use instruments available in the classroom.)
Make up Classes:
Please note that we do not offer any make up classes.
COVID Policies:
All of our Ready, Set, Play! teachers have been vaccinated against COVID-19. We will continue to monitor and update our policies as CDC guidelines are updated, but at this time:
RSP and introductory classes will be limited to 4 children with one teacher
Children may be accompanied by 1 adult in the classroom
Classrooms are equipped with a blue air filter and window access
All shared instruments and materials will be sanitized regularly
Families who submit a registration form agree to comply with the school’s policies regarding COVID-19.
Please note
In the event that Coronavirus cases increase to a level that the CDC and local government officials recommend discontinuing in-person instruction, our in-person classes will transition online with the same teacher, at the same time. Our RSP teachers are very comfortable adapting the class to an online format and students can expect the same quality instruction. Students are not offered a refund except in extenuating circumstances.
More about the curriculum and instruction:
In Ready, Set, Play! children learn to accept instruction from the teacher in small doses while also given freedom to express themselves with the instruments. Each child has one-on-one time with the teacher and the instruments, as well as experiences making music with the group. Note values and the reading and writing of rhythms are introduced. Children proudly compose their own short rhythmic pieces and learn to play them on their own instruments at the school (in-person) or at home (online).
As students grow and mature, Ready, Set, Play! classes grow and develop with your child. Parts of the class model the quiet learning environment of a private lesson where children learn to take turns, follow directions, and be attentive with the comfort of their parent or caregiver close-by. Most of our students participate in RSP classes for multiple semesters or years, allowing them to grow in self-confidence and enthusiasm for music while working on developing the focus necessary for private study. Our teachers are adept at supporting and challenging students at every level in our very small classes, allowing mixed-age and mixed-level classes to be successful and motivating for all of the children.
In a typical RSP class, children may sing the Rest Position Song with violins under their arms and take a bow, play along the Twinkle Variations or Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with rhythm sticks, play an improvisatory piece on a group of drums, pluck the String Song on small cellos, move to the rhythmic elements of “beat”, “running”, and “half”, practice flute “sign language”, and find patterns and sing note names on the piano.
In our online RSP classes, children use xylophones and rhythm sticks sent to their homes to further understand musical concepts and develop physical dexterity for instrumental playing. Our teachers have thoughtfully adapted our traditional RSP class for an online platform and successfully taught over Zoom since Spring 2020. In addition to our weekly “live” online RSP classes, students enrolled in Ready, Set, Play! receive 1 pre-recorded video weekly, produced by our faculty. Each video offers a musical activity to practice with your child or highlights a particular instrument.
“Ready-Set-Play! has been my daughter’s primary introduction to music – and such a positive one! The experiences are rich and varied, and the learning environment so warm and encouraging. I wish I had had a class like this when I was a child.”
